The History of the Housewives!
The Real Housewives franchises are some of the most popular in the country and across the globe. When you watch the Real Housewives, you’re let into a secret corner of the world and get to observe wealthy women and their families. However, in some housewives’ cases they become the breadwinner because of their success on the show (and some already are).
Scott Dunlap created the Real Housewives of Orange County, the first of the housewife franchises, which first premiered in 2006 on Bravo. There are currently 11 housewife franchises in the United States alone and 21 others worldwide.
Casting is a huge part of making the housewife franchises as long running and entertaining as they are. The women who appear on the shows are often casted through their own social circles (if someone else they know is already on the cast), casting calls, and social media.
The real housewives of Atlanta later premiered in 2008. The Atlanta franchise quickly became and has stayed a fan favorite. This past weekend at BravoCon, Gizelle Bryant spoke about the Real Housewives of Atlanta. She expressed that especially as a black woman, she feels judged more harshly by fans and networks and expressed her gratitude for the women who made The Real Housewives of Atlanta such a success because it was able to pave the way for The Real Housewives of Potomac. These women include Nene Leakes, Kandi Burruss and Kenya Moore.
The Real Housewives of Potomac, which premiered in 2016, is currently on it’s tenth season. While some of the women have come and gone, the show continues to be entertaining and a fan favorite.
And of course, we can’t talk about the housewife franchises without talking about the host who has been there since day one: Andy Cohen. Andy Cohen is the host of each and every single housewives reunion episodes. Andy started his career as an intern at CBS news and eventually became a producer and executive at Bravo, allowing him to step into the role of reunion host. Cohen also hosts a late-night show called Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. On this show, he brings on current bravo-leberties (bravo celebrities) and other famous guests from all areas of media. He also has a “bartender” who is a lesser-known creative for each episode who is promoting some sort of project or item being sold to gain publicity.
